And what's his main message going to be?

"Hard work doesn't start during the game,'' he said. "Hard work starts the night before.''

Regardless of what happened last year -- and several good people did lose jobs because of the events of 2010 -- the organziation has to try to put it in the rear-view mirror. It will take time for some to forgive Griffey. And some fans may never do that. That's their choice.

But in my view, you do have to put the events of last year into the context of a 20-year career. If some of you want to include 1999 in that context, again, it's your right.

You've read my stuff about Griffey and know how I feel about what went on last season.

But you also know, if you've kept reading this space, that I believe the organization, in the wake of Niehaus's death, had to find some way to bring Griffey back into the fold. That he was too important a part of Mariners' history -- good and bad, but mostly good -- to be estranged from the city he spent most of his career in.

Griffey said he has no regrets about coming back to play in 2010 after what could have been a storybook sendoff in 2009.

"No,'' he said. "I mean, things happen. Through no fault of its own, things happen. I got to meet some great people last year. If I wouldn't have done it, I wouldn't have had an opportunity to meet some of the people in Seattle that I did meet...and who still call me today. So, no, I'm not sorry that I came back.''

It may take time for some to get the appreciation back that many fans felt in 2009. And some may never get it back. But the team had to try.

Griffey came today and offered his explanation. It may be enough for some, not enough for others, but it's a start. And it's as good as it's going to get.

Bo Jackson finishes 300-mile tornado relief ride

Bo Jackson's 300-mile bike ride across Alabama ended Saturday in Tuscaloosa, with the Heisman Trophy winner having raised more than $413,000 so far to help victims of last spring's tornado outbreaks.

The ride - dubbed "Bo Bikes Bama" - crossed the finish line in Tuscaloosa around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The ride passed through some of the communities hit hardest by more than 60 twisters that destroyed thousands of homes and businesses and killed about 250 people on April 27, 2011. Bo Jackson begins bike ride for tornado relief

Pedaling past tornado-tossed homes and broken trees, Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson and about 100 bicyclists started a five-day, 300-mile bike trek across north Alabama on Tuesday to raise money for storm relief in the state.

The ride - dubbed "Bo Bikes Bama" - will pass through some of the communities hit hardest by more than 60 twisters that destroyed thousands of homes and businesses and killed about 250 people last April 27. It coincides with a week of observances of the anniversary of the devastating onslaught.

"They say there's a couple of areas we're gonna pass through that look somebody took a weed whacker and just took out a hundred yards or so," said Griffey, who has never seen tornado destruction up close.

A crowd of about 200 people cheered "Go Bo, Go," as the ride began in tiny Henagar, located in northeast Alabama's DeKalb County, where more than 30 people were killed. Before going to the starting line, Jackson met privately with 11-year-old Bryce Ferguson, whose parents and little sister Emma were among the dead.

"Everybody asks me why I decided to do this ride. It's because of people like Bryce," Jackson said. "He lost everything, but he is standing tall. He is going on with his life, and he's got people in his life that care about him and are loving him."

Jackson rode a specially made bike painted orange and blue, the colors of his alma mater, Auburn University. It also bears the name of every person who died in the twisters.

The storms left a path of destruction that, all put together, stretched 1,000 miles long and 20 miles wide. The ride ends Saturday in Tuscaloosa, where more than 50 deaths were blamed on a tornado.

Riders got a glimpse of the way twisters hop-scotched across the state a year ago, passing from unaffected neighborhoods into zones that looked like logging crews had cut down every tree and left bare, scarred dirt.
